After winning Steelers, Gradkowski proved he is worth being started

By throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Louis Murphy with 9 seconds left in the Oakland Raiders’ 27-24 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, quarterback Bruce Gradkowski now has his starting role solidified.

“I’m pretty confident in my abilities and being a starter in this league,” Gradkowski said. “If yesterday cemented it, that’s good. My goal is to continue to be successful and put this team in position to win football games. And that’s my job, and I have to just be the manager on offense. And whatever happens after that will happen.”

Raiders coach Tom Cable gave his confirmation that Gradkowski will keep the starting job as long as he keeps performing as good as he has been so far. Gradkowski seems to have his time come again. He was starter when he was a rookie in Buccaneers jersey in 2006, but got cut by the Bucs, Rams and Browns in less than a nine-month stretch.

Rams Coach Spagnuolo has no plan to change quarterbacks

After last weekend’s win over the Detroit Lions, the St. Louis Rams Coach Steve Spagnuolo has more reason to stick with current quarterback Marc Bulger, although the quarterback has thrown only three touchdown passes and has a passer rating of 68.2.

“I think Marc has done everything we needed him to do,” Spagnuolo said. “I’ve said this before; it’s not one position on the side of the ball, it’s everybody. He has been a leader, he manages the game, gets the ball to 39 (running back Steven Jackson), and there are pieces that he is working through, too.”

Bulger became the Rams won the job of starting quarterback over Kurt Warner, who was still wearing Rams jersey, in 2002 after he made his second Pro Bowl appearance. Since then, things did not go to the good direction. The Rams are 6-34 since 2007 and Bulger spent most of the previous two seasons taking a beating behind makeshift offensive lines, getting sacked a combined 75 times.

Will Rams have their favorable turn in 2009? It does not seem like possible. They lost seven straight games before last weekend and the win over the Lions was more like a fluke than a turn, still leaving the Nov.15th game against the 7-0 New Orleans Saints very little chance to win.

Stafford’s status is still uncertain for Sunday’s game against Steelers

The Detroit Lions Coach Jim Schwartz seemingly still waits for good news on quarterback Matt Stafford’s injury. With only two days left before the Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was still not ready to announce the starting quarterback for the game.

What seemed to good news was that the rookie quarterback finally put back on his No. 9 Lions jersey and took part in team practices, on limited basis, after missing practice Wednesday and Thursday. But the Coach refused to tell how much work the first overall pick in April’s draft had done in team drills, and Stafford declined to speak to the media. So, I guess the quarterback’s performance might not be good enough.

That means a bigger chance to veteran Daunte Culpepper, who will be Stafford’s replacement and start against the Steelers if the rookie will not be able to play. To be or not to be the starter, he may have known already, but we will not know until Sunday as Schwartz has said that he would announce the starter by then.
