Former NFL place-kicker Tony Zendejas has sued the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department after he was eventually acquitted, claiming that he was harassed wrongly for seven years.
Zendejas’ $2 million suit claims he was charged with rape without foundation. A Los Angeles County sheriff’s official declined comment on Monday.
Zendejas was acquitted in March of charges of drugging a woman at his San Dimas restaurant last year and raping her without wearing any piece of miami dolphins jersey. He was initially charged with four felony sex counts—two of which were dismissed during the trial.
Zendejas retired in 1995. Before that he had been playing for the Los Angeles Rams, Houston Oilers, Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers.
